Steelman First

Argue the strongest version of the other side before you answer it.

Before responding to a position, restate it in its strongest, most charitable form — one its holder would recognize and endorse. If you can only beat a weak version (a straw man), you haven’t beaten anything. Steelmanning does two things: it keeps you honest, and it occasionally changes your own mind, because the best version of the other side is sometimes right.
