Believe well epistemology

Special Pleading

Applying a rule to everyone but yourself, with no reason for the exception.

Watch for a standard held firmly against others but quietly waived for yourself, your side, or your favored case — with no principled reason for the exemption. The test is consistency: if the rule is good, it applies to you too; if you need an exception, you need an actual reason, not just that it’s yours. Special pleading is how people keep a belief their own principle should have killed.
